White Deer
On the blog, we’ve covered many animal omens: ravens, dogs, and more. Animal omens cross centuries and countries and even religions. Almost every culture on earth has a story behind seeing a certain kind of animal either as a spiritual messenger, harbingers of what is to come, or something stranger. Today, I want to talk about white deer.
The meaning behind seeing a white deer exists in European, Asian, Native American, and other cultures. While some have different mythologies or meanings, it is almost a portent of something if you cross paths with this luminous creature. There are stories of white deer, in particular, leading people to their destinies.
In Hungarian mythology, it was a white stag that led Hunor and Magnar to settle in Scythia and start their storied lineages. In Native American myth, the Lenape believed that seeing a pair of white deer together is a sign that indigenous people across the Dawnland will come together and lead the world through their wisdom. In Japan, a herd of white deer appeared before the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism at the Engakuji to listen to the temple's founder the day it opened.
The reason seeing a white deer is seen as an omen: its rarity and uniqueness means few people get to see them truly in the wild. It might, before photography, feel like seeing a unicorn. Now match that with something amazing happening - finding the love of your life, winning a battle, a major political change and you have yourself an omen.
Perhaps the difference is the reverence often reported along with the sightings. A deep sense of peace, inherent wisdom, and a sense of direction are often associated with these sightings.
The purity and rarity of its coloring often is meant to reflect a clear, untainted soul. The feelings it generates often makes it seem like a vessel for divine energy. These are not jut animals, but spirit animals: guides of our lost loved ones, a message from the divine, or perhaps just mother nature showing her fabulous card.
White Deer are so powerful, they are often included in oracle decks and pulling one means you should trust the path you're on, a calling to move toward service-oriented work, or even a soulmate connection entering your life.
If you ever see a white deer there are a few things to do. First off, just stand in respectful silence. Know that the moment you're in is sacred. Then, don't be afraid to ask for clarity. After your experience, reflect and pay attention to any major decisions coming up.
