Ep 330: The Strange Death of Gloria Ramirez

We agreed to settle in part to avoid stirring up allegations about safety hazards at the hospital.
— Peter Osinoff, attorney for Riverside County, on the $350,000 settlement of the Ramirez family lawsuit, March 25, 1998

Description:

In 1994, Gloria Ramirez, a 31-year-old mother of two dying from cancer, arrived at a Riverside, California Emergency Room with noxious fumes excreting from her skin which also had an oily sheen on it, and with crystalline particles precipitating in her blood — then doctors and nurses around her began collapsing, vomiting, experiencing burning sensations, and struggling to breathe. The ER was evacuated and the HAZMAT suits came out. Gloria died in the chaos, and the official explanation still leaves troubling questions. Behind the nickname “The Toxic Lady” is a human being whose final night remains one of the most bizarre medical mysteries of our time.
